Setting up a developmental plan of right action using SWOT

While we use SWOT in this system to gather the raw material for the developmental plan, it is perfectly acceptable to use other assessment tools singly and in conjunction with the SWOT to focus yourself on the developmental objective or issue that has the greatest internal, external, financial and developmental leverage.

In every system of business and development there are always three critical components in every chosen role:

  • Identity

  • Purpose

  • Intention

These three components form a process of right action.  Right action when used with focused attention, leads to alignment and capability through coaching—the remaining four competencies of effective leadership.

Without understanding who you are, or what your business or organizational core competence is and what is the purpose you intend, you're always going to be guessing more than you have to.  In the following series of steps, we are going to take you step by step through a proven process of creating clarity of right action.

Essentially the key is to be able to know what to say yes to and what to say no in whatever context or conditions that are important.

However, to do so we have to begin with a simple way of fleshing out the context you intend to work within.  It doesn't matter what context or role you choose, each of them requires us to be clear.  In order to reach clarity we take some simple, yet critically important steps.  The first series of steps begins with a SWOT Analysis.

If you want to conduct a PEST Analysis, it may help you to do so.

We're not sure how you like to work, so if you need more information, you can download the SWOT OVERVIEW and SWOT WORKSHEET in MSWord95.

It's okay if you don't download them or have MSWord, you can just write them down on a sheet of paper or type them on your word processor.  You'll need them later, so be sure to keep them!

If you would like to trigger an automated coaching system that prompts you and guides you through the process in about 10 days--complete the following form:

SWOT: Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats

In the following short series of steps, we need you to record your S.W.O.T.

First thing to do is to write down all of your strengths as viewed through your life or business, depending on your viewpoint.  You may want to print off this page as a worksheet or download the worksheet provided below.  Don't skip to the next page until you finish this exercise!  You may want to email or fax this page to your coach.

Here are some questions to think about while you do it:

  • Strengths:
  • What are your advantages?

  • What do you do well?

  • What can you do better than anyone else?

  • What is natural for you?

  • What comes easy for you?

  • What are your preferences?

  • What would people hire you to do because you're so good at it?
